Ankle and foot pain is common and affects people of all ages. It can result from injury, overuse, ageing or genetic factors. Often the pain arises from changes in the joint lining, such as arthritis, or from ligament tears following an injury like an ankle sprain. Occasionally it comes from conditions such as gout, and rarely from infection. Getting to the cause early helps us treat it effectively.

When you present for assessment, we look for signs that guide diagnosis, including redness and warmth, weakness or instability, popping or crunching, locking or difficulty moving the ankle, trouble bearing weight, marked swelling, or an ankle that gives way. We also watch for warning signs such as fever alongside redness, pain and swelling, which may need prompt attention.

After your assessment we put together a management plan. Very often this includes a home exercise program to improve strength, balance and flexibility, which is especially important for regaining stability after a sprain. If your examination points to a more significant problem, you may need to see a specialist. Our clinic has two ankle and foot specialists available for consultation, and we can arrange an MRI if required. As a patient here, we can often fast-track your access to specialist care. Should imaging reveal a significant issue, specialist review will often be recommended.

What to expect

We assess your ankle and foot, checking movement, strength, balance and any warning signs, then explain the likely cause. Most people receive a tailored exercise program focused on strength, balance and flexibility. If needed, we can arrange an MRI and fast-track review with our on-site foot and ankle specialists.
