Pain is a complex experience that involves many factors, and it affects people of all ages. When pain becomes persistent, the usual short-term treatments may not be enough on their own. Our pain relief service focuses on helping you understand your pain and giving you the tools to manage and overcome it, so you can get back to the life you want to live.
Education and advice sit at the centre of this approach. We teach you what pain actually means, how to manage it, and how to gradually return to activities you may have been avoiding. Using pacing, we help you build up the things you are currently finding difficult, alongside specific exercises to improve muscular control, strength and postural endurance. Over time this improves your physical tolerance and your ability to get through daily activities, including work and returning to work.
For some conditions, the nervous system itself needs retraining. Certain pain syndromes, such as CRPS and frozen shoulder, may benefit from brain retraining techniques. The experienced Physiofit team can deliver these, including two-point discrimination retraining, lateral discrimination exercises and mirror box therapy. It is a supportive, encouraging approach that puts you back in control rather than relying on others to fix the problem. For further information on these programs you can speak with the Physiofit team based in the Orthosports building at Concord.
We take time to understand your pain and how it affects your life, then explain how pain works in plain language. Your plan combines education, pacing and specific exercises, and may include brain retraining techniques for certain conditions. Throughout, we provide support and encouragement to help you do more.
