Knee pain is a common complaint that affects people of all ages. It can follow an injury, build up from overuse, or develop with ageing and genetic factors. Often the pain comes from changes in the joint lining, such as arthritis, or from ligament and cartilage injuries. Less commonly it stems from conditions like gout, and rarely from infection. Understanding the cause is the first step to treating it well.
When you come in for assessment, we look carefully for signs that guide diagnosis, including redness and warmth, weakness or instability, popping or crunching, locking or difficulty straightening the knee, trouble bearing weight, significant swelling, or a knee that gives way. We also note warning signs such as fever alongside redness, pain and swelling, which may need prompt attention.
After your assessment we arrange a management plan. Very often this includes a home exercise program aimed at improving strength and flexibility, which helps the majority of knee problems settle without surgery. If your examination points to something more significant, you may need to see an orthopaedic surgeon and possibly have an MRI. As a patient of our clinic, we can often fast-track your access to specialist care when it is required. Should the MRI reveal a serious issue, the surgeon can discuss surgical options, but most knee complaints we see do not need surgery.
We assess your knee, checking movement, strength, stability and any warning signs, then explain what we find. Most people receive a tailored home exercise program to build strength and flexibility. If further investigation is needed, we can help arrange an MRI and fast-track specialist review.
